Lithuania has become one of the most popular study destinations for international students – and for good reason. Affordable tuition, high-quality education, English-taught programmes and a welcoming student environment. If you're Azerbaijani and planning to study in Lithuania, this guide covers everything you need to know about the student TRP process.
Step 1: Get Accepted to a Lithuanian University
You cannot apply for a student TRP without an official acceptance letter (also called an offer letter or admission letter) from a Lithuanian university. This forms the foundation of your entire TRP application.
Lithuanian universities offer English-taught programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral level. The most popular universities among international students include Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) and ISM University of Management and Economics.
Once you have your acceptance letter and paid the tuition fee, you can begin the TRP application process immediately.
Step 2: Gather the Required Documents
The Lithuanian student TRP requires a specific set of documents. Make sure every document is complete and properly certified before you apply:
- Valid passport – valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay
- University acceptance letter – official, stamped letter from a Lithuanian university
- Completed online application form
- Passport-size photos – typically 2 photos meeting Schengen requirements
- Proof of financial means – confirmation of available funds showing you can cover tuition and living costs (minimum of 7000 eur, alongside bank statement of last 6 months)
- Health insurance – valid for the entire duration of stay, covering at least €30,000
- Proof of accommodation – dormitory booking confirmation or rental agreement (if any)
- Academic transcripts and diplomas – certified copies with translation if in Lithuanian
- Proof of tuition payment – evidence that tuition has been paid or you are registered to pay
- TRP application fee – approximately €60–120 depending on processing speed
Step 3: Appointment at the VFS GLOBAL
Azerbaijani citizens apply for the Lithuanian student TRP at the VFS GLOBAL in Baku. You must book an appointment in advance – walk-in applications are generally not accepted.
At your appointment, you will submit your documents, have biometric data (fingerprints and photo) recorded, and pay the TRP fee. An officer may ask questions about your study plans, chosen programme and financial situation – answer clearly and honestly.
Step 4: Wait for the TRP Decision
The standard processing time for TRP is 2-3 months. During peak seasons (June–August) it may take slightly longer.
Common Reasons for TRP Rejection (and How to Avoid Them)
- Insufficient proof of finances – make sure your bank statements are recent (last 6 months) and show adequate funds
- Incomplete documents – missing translations, missing stamps or unclear copies are frequent issues
- Gaps in health insurance – ensure your policy explicitly covers Lithuania and is valid for the full duration
- Poor interview performance with Migration officers

How Much Does It Cost?

Do I need IELTS to study in Lithuania?
Not always. Many Lithuanian universities accept alternative proof of English proficiency – such as previous education in English, university entrance tests or internal language assessments. Read our full guide: How to Study in Europe Without IELTS.
Can I stay in Lithuania after graduation?
Yes. Lithuania offers a post-graduation temporary residence permit allowing graduates to stay for up to 12 months to look for work or start a business. Once you find employment, you can apply for a work-based residence permit.
What should I do if my TRP is refused?
